Neaera est formé en 2003 par le guitariste Tobias Buck à Münster, en Allemagne. En 2005, le groupe sort un premier album studio, The Rising Tide of Oblivion, qui sort sous le label Metal Blade Records, avec qui le groupe est toujours en contrat.
