Stratovarius est un groupe finlandais de speed metal mélodique fondé en 1984 à Helsinki par le bassiste John Vihervä, le batteur et chanteur Tuomo Lassila, et le guitariste Staffan Stråhlman. Le nom actuel est une contraction entre Stratocaster, qui est un modèle de guitare, et Stradivarius, qui est le nom des violons fabriqués par le luthier du même nom. Le premier nom du groupe était Black Water. À cette époque, le groupe était principalement influencé par Black Sabbath et Ozzy Osbourne. Sous le pseudo Eluvium se cache l'artiste Matthew Cooper, connu pour mélanger des genres de musiques expérimentales comme l'électronique, l'ambient, la minimale et le piano. Dans un univers qui va du fragile au glacial, il créé des couches denses de guitares et de pianos, et il les imbrique tel une forteresse autour de lui.
