91年にロスで結成。 中心人物はメキシカンの血を引くザック・デ・ラ・ロッチャと、黒人と白人のハーフでハーバード大学を卒業し、議員秘書の経験を持つトム・モレロだ。 パンク、ファンク、ヒップホップ、メタルを融合させたサウンドと政治的な主張がこのバンドの特徴。 92年にセルフタイトルアルバムでデビュー。 トップバンドとなったのはロラパルーザで注目を集めたことが大きかった。。 初期のロラパルーザは、名の知られていない良質なオルタナバンドを世に知らしめる役割を果たしていたが、レイジ・アゲインスト・ザ・マシーンもロラパルーザを機にブレイクしていった。 持ち時間が少なく観客から無視されて当然というフェスの一番手に登場したレイジ・アゲインスト・ザ・マシーンは激しいパフォーマンスで観客を大熱狂させることに成功。 注目を集めることとなり、アルバムを300万枚以上売り上げトップバンドとなっていった。 またフィラデルフィア公演では、歌詞の検閲を推し進める団体"PMRC"に抗議する意味で、14,000人のオーディエンスの前で口にガムテープを張り、全裸で15分間ステージに仁王立ちし、演奏をしないでステージを降りるといった伝説も残した（後にフィラデルフィアで無料ライヴを行って穴埋め。）。 政治的な歌詞やプロモーションビデオだけでなく、不当な賃金で働かされている労働者のために立ち上がったり、フリー・ムミア、チベタンフリーダムへの参加、民主党党大会会場近くでの無料ライヴなど、実際に起こしたアクションが目立つ。 社会を支配しているのは大企業、政治家は大企業の操り人形だと主張しながらも、バンドはソニーという大企業のメジャーレーベルに所属しているという矛盾を指摘されたこともある。 しかし、それは政治的な主張を大勢の人に届けるためであった。 90年代後半になると、レイジ・アゲインスト・ザ・マシーンの成功により、メジャーレーベルはラップメタルに目を付けるようになり、ラップメタルが溢れかえるシーンの引き金となってしまった。 このようなシーンにザックは強い嫌悪感を露にした。 バンドメンバーは固い絆で結ばれていたかのように見えたが、2000年に突然ザックが脱退。 他の３人とザックの間に深い亀裂が入ってしまった。 だが2007年にブッシュ政権にとどめを刺すために再結成。 2008年2月には来日公演を果たした。 .

Beautiful World is a project of Phil Sawyer. He was born in London and is an English New Age musician. During the mid-1990s he worked together with the Malcolm Sargent Festival Choir and with vocalists Russian Roulette (a.k.a. Rush Winters), Beryl Marsden and Miriam Stockley, among others, under the artistic name Beautiful World, publishing two albums "In Existence (1994)" and "Forever (1996). Many of the songs included lyrics in Swahili, while others were in English, French or purely instrumental. .

There are at least three bands using this name: 1) A jazz band from New York, formed in 1986. Its members were: Robert Musso: guitars, Thomas Chapin: reeds and flute, John Richey: vocals, cut-ups, tapes, tv, Bil Bryant: drums, Jair-Rohm Parker Wells: basses.
